What Is Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate Marketing is when someone promotes a product with a unique
tracking link that links back to them.
Through affiliate marketing, a company can track how many sales the person brought directly to a business.
In exchange for marketing the company, the person receives a portion of the revenue at no additional cost to the customer.
Joe Flanagan, Lead App Developer at GetSongbpm emphasizes that affiliate marketing is a subject that is often overcomplicated, yet it is actually quite simple in reality.
People who suffer from information overload should forget what they have read about affiliate marketing thus far – and only focus on the basics, as there are only a few steps needed to get started.

23. Pick Your Affiliate Programs Carefully |
1. Understand How It Works
Like anything in life, in order to master affiliate marketing, you need to first understand how it works and practice good activities.
To help you understand more about the affiliate marketing model, here’s a free online course that can teach you how to earn your first commissions with affiliate marketing.
When you become an affiliate with a particular brand or network, you will be given a unique hoplink (a referral tracking URL).
If people end up signing up, registering, or purchasing the product or service from the vendor, you will be compensated a percentage of the sale, again, at no additional cost to the buyer!
To make it short and simple, there are basically two main approaches for promoting your affiliate links; push traffic to the sales page directly, and take people to a landing page where you collect leads and sell them at ease!
An old marketing maxim shows that customers need to see you and hear your message at least 7 times before they take action to buy your product or service.
Want to learn network marketing the right way? This FREE book could be a great fit for such purposes.
2. Become Authoritative In Your Niche
Rick Wallace’s advice (founder of Tackle Village) for starting an affiliate site is to choose a topic that you are interested in and have more than a basic knowledge of.
To get people to read your site and your reviews and to stand out above the crowd long term you are going to have to write with authority on the topic.
I am not saying you have to be an expert, but at the very least you should be an enthusiast. That knowledge and enthusiasm will flow through in your words and the personality of your site.
In other words, you need to aim for being a one-stop directory in your niche, so people who leave your site have all of their questions and queries fully fulfilled!
Being said, to be able to build that authority, you should provide real value to people around the world and aim to become a one-stop resource for whatever niche you are in!
And here’s where blogging comes into place! A blog has the power to build that awareness, authority and trust for your name and your brand’s as well!
Starting a blog is not a big deal like it used to be in the old days. It only takes a couple of minutes to have your site up and running and ready for publishing awesome and valuable content.
Want to learn how start a money-making blog that you can leverage to build authority and organically promote your affiliate within your content?
3. Be Familiar With What You Promote
Affiliate marketing is an excellent opportunity if you truly believe in the value of the product you’re selling.
My biggest tip for mastering affiliate marketing is to learn about the product you’re promoting and what appeals the most to your audience.
For instance, Emma Jacquelyn of EmJacquelyn has established a niche in affordable fashion and amazon finds. She knows her audience is looking for cute clothing without breaking the bank.
Because of this, She features mostly amazon finds under $35 on the Amazon Affiliate program and RewardStyle / LiketoKnowit affiliate program. Doing so has increased her social media following and my sales month-over-month.
Research the product you are promoting, find out what it does, its advantages and disadvantages, because here’s why…
Knowing your product better will distinguish you from your competitors. You will be recommending the products to your visitors so it is important you have all the information about it and are an expert.
You need to believe in the product you are selling only then you will be able to stand out. Also, try to find out how your product is better and different than the competitor’s product.
Do not sign up to a product just because it is related to your niche, or for the sake of money. Do your research and get the chance to try it yourself.
If you had a great experience using that product/software, delight your customers by recommending it to them too!
4. Set A Plan And Know What You Want
It’s important to know your plans and what you actually aiming for, because things get achievable and doable when you set a plan and commit to it!
You should determine, are you looking forward to earning few bucks here and there (Hit & Run Business), or you want to keep getting paid for months or even years to go?
In order to achieve big things, you need to first be passionate about it, believe that it works and have a plan for hitting your goal and break it down into actionable steps!
Russell, for example, didn’t know that making a million dollars a day online is something that exists until he had met John Reese.
It took Russell a couple of years until he was able to finally do it! Make a million dollars in revenue in 24 hours!
And that’s what he’s actually doing right now; teaching people the same strategies he used to grow his company and be able to make millions of dollars a month!
5. Leverage Sales Funnel
While a static website acts as a wall, a sale funnel acts as a path that walks people into the sales process, from being cold visitors to purchasing your product or service.
With a sale funnel, you will have more control over where you want your potential customers to actually go.
Above all, it will be easier for you to track people’s activity and behavior on your web page too.
Did you know that using the funnel above, Russell was able to generate over $50,000,000 to his company; Clickfunnels?
Clickfunnels is a solid marketing toolkit that helps businesses sell their products and services online by leveraging funnels.
Over $6.6B has been proceed through Clickfunnels! Could 142,000+ users just be wrong?
When you join Clickfunnels (by the way, they have a free trial), you will get access to unlimited pre-built funnels and landing pages in all niches and industries.

6. Never Neglect Building Your List

You can create outstanding lead forms like this using GetResponse to capture people’s interest and start building a healthy relationship with them for years to come.
7. Attend Virtual Summits And Online Events
“The affiliate marketing world is strangely small.” Said Adam Rizzieri, Chief Marketing Officer Agency Partner Interactive.
Sure, there are thousands of product companies that function as advertisers, but the heavy hitters in the space are fewer than not.
Whether you are an affiliate network, a publisher, or an advertiser, by consistently attending the bigger tradeshow, such as Virtual Summits and online events, you are able to build extremely valuable business relationships.
As an advertiser, you want to align yourself with the most relevant internet publishers in your market and work closely with a few highly capable, established affiliate networks that also have relationships with publishers that are filtered through a functional compliance team.
When you expose your brand to the affiliate world, it is important to maintain a specific level of control over the methods and messaging that 3rd party marketers use to send customers to your company.
Without enforceable marketing guidelines and a trusted marketing partner, affiliate marketers could expose your brand to significant legal risks such as CAN-SPAM or FTC regulatory issues.
Here are some virtual events that you can join:
- Partner With Anthony
- Super Affiliate System
- One Funnel Away Challenge
- 15-Day Business Builder Challenge
8. Learn From Top Marketers And Big Achievers
The internet is a wide place, and it has its advantages and disadvantages.
One of the biggest advantages is that you have access to the knowledge. A lot of information to be gained online, buy you just need someone guide and lead you to the right path.
There are thousands of successful people and entrepreneurs who are sharing their tips and strategies with complete beginners who are looking forward to getting started with their online journey.
Just go find people who have already done it, leverage their tactics and techniques follow their steps, and if they did it you can do it too, right?
Pro Tip: Don’t repeat the same mistake that I’ve done! Don’t get overwhelmed watching too many videos and listening to too many gurus and mentors.
That’s why I recommend investing in a whole comprehensive training like the OFA Challenge, and have a game plan in place that can help you build your dream business reliably!
Some of the marketers and Clickfunnels affiliates that you will get the chance to learn from inside the One Funnel Away Challenge are:
- Russell Brunson
- Stephen Larsen
- Julie Stoian
- Spencer Mecham
- Rachel S. Lee
- Chris Fong
- Frank Hatchett
- James Hurst

- Greg Jeffries
- Peng Joon
- Stephen Esketzis
Check out this page to learn how you can achieve results like these using affiliate marketing.
9. Aim For Monthly Recurring Revenue
Unless you are looking forward to making some bucks here and there, you would need to consider promoting affiliate programs that pay you recurring revenue.
This is huge because you only do the work once, and keep getting paid for months or even years to come!
Some powerful affiliate programs that pay MRR, that you can promote as an affiliate are:
- ClickFunnels
- GetResponse
- Clickbank University
- Wealthy Affiliates
For more high-paying affiliate programs, please check out my other article here.
The internet is full of scammy marketers hawking products they’d never use, and it shows in the quality of their content and the loyalty of their audience.
Daniel Caughill, Co-Founder of The Dog Tale suggests to only promote products you’d want to use yourself!
If you want to build a business that will survive more than a couple of years, you need to take your brand’s reputation seriously. If you do, your readers will repay you.
10. Join The One Funnel Away Challenge
The One Funnel Away Challenge is an extensive 30-day training by the great Russell Brunson (co-founder and owner of Clickfunnels) who is famous for a reason!
Russell was able to grow his company by over 4300% in less than 3 years, and in this training, he shares his exact strategies for bringing his business from zero to hero!
This challenge is for all types of businesses, and if you are really passionate about raising a profitable business, it will help you grow ANY business by leveraging sales funnels! In fact, I wrote an in-depth article about it, I strongly recommend checking it out.
11. Keep On Reading And Learning
Reading is what actually keeps your brain active and alive!
When you read, you instantly acquire the mentality of the authors. That’s why it’s so important to read for authoritative and best-selling authors like Russel Brunson, Anik Singal, Robert Kiyosaki and others.
With that being said, here are my picks for the best network marketing out there:
- Dotcom Secrets, by Russell Brunson (Get it from here)
- Traffic Secrets, by Russell Brunson (Get it from here)

12. The More You Give The More You Get
“No one has ever become poor by giving!”
Anne Frank
It’s true! The more you give the more you get, and this should be your approach to your online business, especially affiliate marketing!
Give generously, and give people a reason to click your links and buy from you, because people buy from people they trust!
Focus on delivering value and putting your readers’ experience at the first level, and you’ll eventually make sales.
Focus on building a community of people who are HUNGRY to hear you or read your content. Your life then will get easier as an affiliate marketer.
13. Make Use Of Analytical Software And Tools
James Jason, Chief Marketing Officer at Mitrade gives great advice here!
One of the most important tips to consider in mastering affiliate marketing is to make use of analytical software and tools.
In fact, this should be as important as oxygen to an affiliate marketer.
In addition to automating some of the tasks, analytical tools can help in knowing the type of advertising media converts best, which ones generate more sales (and income).
It will also show the demographics of the target market, and also indicate where the traffic with the most success originates from.
According to NameCheap, tracking your affiliate marketing analytics and knowing your numbers does increase your conversions!
A good starting point is to start with understanding the Google Analytics interface.
With this info in hand, it is possible for a brand to know the weak points to improve on, the strong areas to focus on, the ads to emphasize, and generally, the most effective marketing approach to build upon.
Evidently, going into affiliate marketing without proper analytical tools is like attempting to fly into space without a spaceship.
14. Narrow Your Focus And Don’t Go Wide
“Instead of targeting many products, one should target one which is compatible with your nitch.” Dev Raj Singh said.
If your target audience is students you cannot sell them the hosting services. This is a rookie mistake that people are doing.
And for targeting people you should create your value, your audience base, and finally your reputation
Once you find an affiliate offer that’s performing well for you, figure out how to get more out of it.
That could mean creating more content around it, running ads to a page promoting it, creating an email marketing campaign around it, or optimizing your current promotional methods.
When Dylan Houlihan, Founder of Swift Salary, started his company, he didn’t follow this advice and it has actually slowed him down.
He says: “Instead of focusing on what was performing, I tried to go wide. I’d apply to multiple affiliate programs every day.”
This just ended up being overwhelming, his content was all over the place, and he had to monitor his links constantly to make sure they were still working.
Dylan emphasizes: “It was super stressful and distracted me from doing the things that would actually push my business forward.”
By focusing on what’s already performing, you’ll increase your conversions
and save yourself a lot of headaches.
15. Find Your Best Traffic Source And Master It
Brian Pfeiffer’s (Owner/Event Planner, Surreal LLC) biggest tip is to stick to one traffic source until you master it.
If you have cracked the code on say Facebook, scale that to the moon before you jump over to another source.
Related: How To Become A Facebook Ads Expert And Help Local Business Owners?
If you are not down for the learning curve, Facebook advertising is a skill that you can always outsource from freelance marketplaces like Fiverr and Upwork.
16. Don’t Advertise The Product
Tom Kelly, of Zero Effort Cach, stands on the idea of acquiring the recommendation approach based on your experience and your use of that product or service, rather than pushing or aggressively trying to sell!
This may sound counterproductive but let me ask you this; if you’ve ever
watched a daytime talk show and an advertorial comes on during the otherwise decent show, do you watch it or tune out?
90% of people who would otherwise be engaged in the show won’t be listening to the blatant advertising masquerading as a genuine conversation (but fooling nobody).
Now apply this to what you’re posting and you can see how page visitors can
be easily turned off clicking your link if it’s clear you’re only talking
about it to make money.
Instead, focus on having a genuine discussion with your audience, write in a conversational tone and be sure to point out at least one improvement; the product could have to give the impression you’re not benefiting from this, and it’s just you’re genuine opinion.
17. Don’t Give Them All The Information
This is also a bit strange, you should be telling the customer everything
they want to know.
But if you want them to click that affiliate link, you need them to leave your site wanting more. This tip typically works best for Amazon (or similar style) links, where the customer is purchasing a product and where the more nitty-gritty information is found on Amazon itself.
For example, if you have, say a furniture niche site and you’re trying to
sell a bedside table, most people will want to know the dimensions, so
leave it out of your info.
You’ve lured them in far enough to be interested, so if they like it so much they want to buy it, they’ll follow it through to check out the dimensions, and you’ve just secured the cookie for whatever purchase they make.
18. Promote Affiliate Programs That Have A Proven Value Ladder
A value ladder is a term from the “Dotcom Secrets Book”, and it’s the sales process, the path that your potential customers walk through from being a visitor to purchasing your product or service.
Companies like Shopify and Clickfunnels have a proven value ladder, in which they give their customers the chance to try their platform and services before even paying bother giving their credit card info.
This is crucial in affiliate marketing! They give you access to all of their platforms, including features and solutions to your problems.
Great companies like the ones mentioned above with a great retention rate are more likely to convert those who are on a free trial.
If they simply see that this tool, software, or platform solves a great problem for them and make their life easy, they will stick and pay for that service.
And when they pay the company, you’re paid too, even after a while of signing up, because those companies have what’s called “Sticky cookies!”
By promoting a company with a proven value ladder, you’ll be leveraging its sales team, marketing, closing, and resources! All for free!
A value ladder has different types and forms:
- A Free Trial
- A Low Monthly Membership Fee
- Free + Shipping Book
19. Push Valuable Content To The Web
Michael Nemeroff Founder and Former CEO at RushOrderTees is totally right!
Affiliate marketing is about creating content and connecting with audiences. High quality, easily ingestible, useful content that aligns with audience intent and engages readers.

By connecting to audiences in a deeply personal way, our marketing becomes an extension of our personality as it comes out through our content and resonates with our target audience.
Everyone wants a magic bullet but there really isn’t one. You have to write all the time, and it has to be good, it has to be informative, and it has to be relevant.

20. Concentrate On Specific Niche Affiliate Business
Too often affiliate marketers use a shotgun approach, getting as many products as possible to push when they should be focusing on their main interest and niche-related products.
If you want to develop a successful affiliate marketing site, Natik Ameen, Marketing Expert at Canz Marketing recommends to always consider one niche.
You need to create other sites to promote other niches, but don’t spread yourself too thin, because that will lead to thin content sites.
21. Become A Super Affiliate System Student
SAS is one of the best affiliate marketing courses that have loads of quality and trustworthy information and resources that can increase your odds of succeeding with affiliate marketing.
John Crestani is the guy behind Super Affiliate System, and he’s one of the most well-known affiliate mentors in the industry. He’s been featured in big publications and TV shows in the past 20 years, so he’s the best to help you with this lucrative side hustle.
His students have earned millions of dollars online, don’t you think that it’s your turn to have a piece of that big fat pie? Join SAS here and get access to targeted pieces of training, resources, and tools that are worth thousands!
22. Disclose Your Affiliate Partnerships
Isabella Garofanelli says that It is crucial to legally disclose affiliate links to make the readers or followers aware that the affiliate marketer is getting paid to promote a certain product.
It’s essential to focus on promoting products that people have tried firsthand in order to build trust with their audience.
For me, for example, on the EcomDimes blog (the site that you’re currently on), this is how i disclose my affiliate links:
You should be as transparent as possible with people and let them know that you’re compensated a percentage of the sale, at no additional cost to them! In fact, not disclosing your affiliate links is one of the many reasons that might get your Amazon Associate account banned!
23. Pick Your Affiliate Programs Carefully
Domantas Gudeliauskas, a marketing manager at Zyro, confirms that it’s important to screen who you’ll accept as a brand representative.
Be sure to check the website your applicants are going to post on, and their reputation, and maybe skim their comments section while you’re at it.
Make sure you’re not signing up with a website that might negatively impact your brand’s reputation. At the end of the day, a few conversions aren’t worth a publicity disaster.

How To Get Started With Affiliate Marketing
So, how to start affiliate marketing as a complete beginner?
Affiliate marketing success lies in its simplicity. Here’s the exact process for what a successful affiliate marketing business should really work like:
1. Choose A Niche And Find A Great Domain Name.
Azza Shahid, an Outreach Consultant at Infinite Recovery recommends you pick your niche carefully and build a strong reputation in it.
Try to pick your niche carefully even if it takes you days to find out what you
want and what you are passionate about, but make sure you choose it with
absolute care.
Picking one niche and building a strong reputation in it will help you earn visitors’ trust.

Here are the most performing and desirable niches by affiliate marketers:
- 18.70% of all affiliate marketers promote fashion products and services.
- Sports and outdoor activities follow at 14.60%.
- While health and wellness, marketers account for 11.10%.
I recommend you pick a niche that you’re passionate about because you are going to be talking about it for a very long time.
If you like what you’re involved in, you will be able to produce valuable content! Otherwise, you will find it hard to get hungry readers waiting to read your content every time you publish.
2. Look For Offers Related To Your Niche
Each niche has its own offers, products, and services that you can monetize your content with and turn it into a profitable business.
There are a bunch of quality networks that connect you with trustworthy vendors and brands.
Some of those are:
- Clickbank
- ShareASale
- MaxWeb
- FlexOffers
- CJ Affiliates
- Rakuten Marketing
- Awin
- MaxBounty
My advice is to focus on a small set of offers and filter what’s performing best and concentrate on it.
3. Set Up A Landing Page That Collects Leads
Affiliate marketing is a great business model and it can get fruitful if only you do it the right way!
Again, if you drive traffic to a product’s sales page directly, you’re not building a business, you are building their business!
Therefore, it’s advisable to build up your mailing list and have a list of people who has problems and interests in common.
And that can easily be achieved through a landing page with a solid lead magnet that targets a specific group of people and fixes a particular problem!
You can offer something in return, such as a free eBook, cheatsheet, webinar or a course. These are what are so-called “pieces of cheese!”
So, in order for them to get that piece of content or a valuable resource, they would need to give away their information. So, it’s a win-win situation!
4. Set Up An Autoresponder
Think about affiliate marketing like a big 1000s pieces puzzle, and it won’t
People buy from people! And it’s known among professional marketers that in order for a visitor to become a customer, they need to trust you.
Here’s where an autoresponder comes into play!
Through an autoresponder, you can achieve the following:
- Greet your readers or customers.
- Thank them for downloading your lead magnet.
- Send out occasional emails to subscribers.
- Get people back to your website.
- Develop trust and stay under their eyes.
- Send special offers and discounts.
It’s recommended to promote the affiliate offers ONLY IN SOME of the emails that are sent out.
Every email or piece of content on the affiliate marketing website should add maximum value for the visitor and subscriber.
Bottom Line: Affiliate marketing is simple when you only focus on the basics when starting out, never be pushy, and provide real value!
Struggling to find the best autoresponder to work with and let them handle your email marketing efforts? I’ve used almost all of them, and the one that has stood out for me was GetResponse.
GetResponse is a reliable yet affordable marketing tool that has a bunch of training, tips video tutorials to help you put your feet into the water.

5. Push Targeted Traffic To Your Funnels
At the end of the day, you won’t make a dime if there are no humans visiting your pages, right?
Being said, there are two main methods to drive traffic to whatever you sell or do online; free methods and paid methods.
Paid methods include paid advertising, media buying, email marketing, PPC, Social media and others.
Free methods, on the other hand, include getting traffic organically from Social media accounts (Facebook groups, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and YouTube.)
Frankly, if you’re looking for a scalable traffic generation method, content marketing tends to be the best method that can bring you results for years to come!
You can set up a blog in a matter of minutes if you follow this guide, and just start publishing valuable content.

It may take months to gain Google’s trust and valuation, but trust me, it’s worth the time and effort!
But, why is this even better than paid advertising?
Simply because when you stop paying for ads, visitors will stop too… It won’t keep bringing you organic visitors every single day.
However, Social media marketing and Facebook paid ads especially is a skill that is worth learning and acquiring. You may need it to promote your lead magnets or even help local business owners to acquire more leads and clients.
If, however, you don’t want to learn that skill, you can always outsource it from freelance marketplaces like Fiverr, Upwork, and Freelancer.
